Not the Wind, Not the Flag

show: Sunday 24 February, 4pm

Not the Wind, Not the Flag is a duo consisting of Colin Fisher (guitar, trap set, percussion, voice, bouzouki, ney, tenor sax, guzheng, hulusi) and Brandon Valdivia (trap set, mbira, slit drum, percussion). Their musical association began in Kitchener-Waterloo in 2005 playing in the trio 'I Have Eaten the City' with multi-instrumentalist Nick Storring. Later that year the three of them moved to the rich musical environment of Toronto where they have come into contact and collaborated with many artists in the experimental, new music, jazz, rock, psych, folk and improvised music communities.

Not the Wind, Not the Flag have played numerous concerts in Toronto and have toured Ontario, Quebec, and the mid-west/northeastern United States sharing the stage with Faust, Paal Nilssen-Love, Frode Gjerstad, Josef Van Wissem, Mary Halvorson, Weasal Walter, Peter Evans, Bill Nace, Sabir Mateen, the John Sinclair Band, Steve Baczkowski, and playing a variety of venues from house shows and loft spaces to John Zorn's venue The Stone and Princeton University.

For Colin and Brandon the experience of music is a transformative tool: a conduit for gnosis and discovering the true self. Their music reflects the traditions of many cultures from around the world but refrains from being derivative and comes from a place of deep respect for the works that have lifted and guided their spirits.
