Sniffin' Around by Matt Brubeck

A trio comprised of three Toronto-based master improvisers, Ugly Beauties explores the terrain between jazz, contemporary classical music and improvisation through a repertoire that organically blends improvised and written material composed by each of the group's members: pianist Marilyn Lerner, cellist Matt Brubeck, and drummer Nick Fraser. Lerner, Brubeck and Fraser possess an uncanny synergy and improvisational virtuosity, which allows the music to remain free as it circulates effortlessly around groove, abstract lyricism, and harmonic exploration.
